Queens Botanical Garden is proud to join Math in Bloom, a program that explores the intersection of math and the natural world. The program is supported by the Simons Foundation as part of its Infinite Sums initiative.
As one of six botanical gardens selected for this program in the United States, QBG will host a series of experiences throughout 2026, highlighting the many beautiful ways that math can be seen in our botanical collection and local wildlife: from Fibonacci sequences in pinecones and flowers to fractals in fern heads and tree branches to the cyclical migration patterns of birds and butterflies.
Upcoming Events
Infinity Day
Saturday, August 8, 10 am – 10:30 pm
Our Math in Bloom programming continues this August with Infinity Day: a full-day celebration of one of math’s most abstract (and most fascinating) ideas. As part of the Simons Foundation’s Infinite Sums initiative, this event invites you to discover how infinity can be observed and understood in the world around us.
Pick up a copy of our new Field Guide, walk the Fibonacci Spiral, participate in interactive demos and activities, join guided tours that uncover hidden mathematical patterns in plants, and hear from our mathematician in residence.
Schedule
10 & 11 am: Math in Bloom Tours
Discover hidden math in the Garden on a mathematician-led tour. Join for a Chinese language edition at 10 am and an English language version at 11 am.
12 pm: Tai Chi Demonstration
See a demonstration by QBG’s Tai Chi group. The art of Tai Chi incorporates elements of geometry and numerical patterns such as circles, spirals, the golden ratio, and binary logic.
12-5 pm: Arts & Crafts
Join in on math-inspired arts and crafts on the Terrace.
1 pm: Ankhlave Garden Project Tour
Explore our new Garden-wide art exhibition in partnership with Ankhlave Arts Alliance on a guided tour and scavenger hunt. Stick around for an opening reception at 2:30 pm.
1 pm: Mathy Happy Hour & Mocktail Mingle
Stop by the bar on the Terrace for a signature cocktail or mocktail inspired by Math in Bloom. Meet our horticulture staff and learn from the pros.
6:45 pm: Sufi Whirling Performance
Be mesmerized by whirling dervishes as they create infinite spirals to the sounds of Juliet Rania and the Persian Music Ensemble.
8 pm: Movie Screening — The Matrix
