In this Free Hours Lecture, Arielle Suskin (PhD candidate at Case Western Reserve University and member of the 68th class of the American Numismatic Society Eric P. Newman Graduate Seminar in Numismatics) will discuss the use of botanical imagery on coins related to the First Jewish Revolt against Rome (66-72 CE). Both sides of the conflict chose plant symbols to demonstrate power. The coins’ botanical imagery engages with the economic and social history of Roman Judaea, Rome’s Flavian emperors, and Roman imperialism. Arielle’s talk discusses the importance of coins as sources for ancient history, the role of agriculture in the Roman Empire, and the power of plants as propaganda. Register here
