MARCH for the Earth at Queens Botanical Garden

Sunday March 25, 2012
10am - 1pm

Regina Forlenza – Queens Botanical Garden

Flushing, NY – May 13, 2012 – On Sunday March 25, 2012, Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) will celebrate the start of spring – on historical Earth Day – by leading community groups, corporate partners, and Queens residents in MARCH for the Earth, a unity-themed day of volunteering.

The free community event will begin at 10am on the grounds of Queens Botanical Garden, where participants will participate in various spring cleaning projects in preparation for QBG’s Opening Weekend (Saturday and Sunday, March 31st and April 1st). After a bagel breakfast, volunteers will clean the Garden perimeter and Woodland Garden, spread mulch in the new sustainable Parking Garden, and help beautify the southern section of the Garden adjoining the neighboring Queensboro Hill community.

Volunteers from a wide swath of the community will be out to lend a hand. The Epsilon Pi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. at Hofstra University, Queens College Men’s Tennis and Women’s Lacrosse Teams, Saint John’s University Toxicology Club, and The Girl Scouts of America have each committed support for the March 25th event. Con Edison, a corporate member of Queens Botanical Garden, has also dedicated more than 50 of its employees to join the day’s activities.

At 12:45pm, Flora, the Garden’s mascot, will lead the assembled volunteers in a parade to the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park Unisphere. At 1pm, the day will conclude with the group singing “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” invoking the theme of the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair – “Peace through Understanding” – where the famous landmark was first unveiled. At least 150 participants total are anticipated for the event.
